One Last Matchstick

blank slate
clean slate
let’s start over

how many times
have we been down this road now?

it feels like forever
and no time at all
where did those years go
if you say they weren’t lost?

my photographic memories
are polaroids
fade

if you knew
what i’d give
to rekindle our flame

for even one ember
is all it takes
to reignite what we lost

i’ll burn for you
because you told me to
way back when
all else was pointless
you gave me pause
to contemplate my purpose

and i would burn
burn
so feverishly bright
that every night would be consumed
by wildfire
we contrived

assume all else burns fitfully
or sublimes
would our pasts be requited?

when you realize nothing ever lasts
will you have decided?
